Evidence-Based Policies for Sustainable Use of Energy in Asia and the Pacific : Fiji

With a clear strategy towards becoming more sustainable in the energy sector, activities in Fiji are focused on developing a more comprehensive understanding of Fiji’s renewable energy resources, in particular the potential of electric vehicles. The adoption of electric vehicles (EV) for land transport was one of the main strategies for reducing emissions identified in the Low Emissions Development Strategy (LEDS) 2018-2050. ESCAP has worked with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MoIT) and the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) to develop an energy knowledge management system and help understand the impact of electric vehicles (EV) on the energy sector. An energy and transport data audit for the electrification of transport sector has been conducted, followed by a localized analysis of the effects of EV adoption on the electricity grid of Viti Levu.

Local stakeholder’s consultation and workshops were drawn on to bring together key energy and transport data holding agencies whose respective inputs guided the project at each stage. A Data and Framework Strategy (DFS) was developed to provide costed recommendations for improved data acquisition and management to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MoIT). The project aims to contribute to the country’s progress towards the targets under the National Energy Policy and achieving Goal 7.

In a high-level meeting with the Ministry, the Minister highlighted that the main recommendations of the analysis would need to be incorporated into the national energy policy and findings could be further used in a cabinet paper.
