Workshop on Environment Statistics for North and Central Asian countries

The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) in collaboration with the Committee on Statistics under the Ministry of National Economy of Kazakhstan organized a workshop on environment statistics for North and Central Asian countries. The workshop will be held at the Plaza Hotel Almaty in Almaty, Kazakhstan, from 15-17 November 2017.

The purpose of the workshop was to exchange experiences and build capacity on the development of environment statistics, environmental-economic accounting and strategic planning for improving environment statistics.

The workshop brought together mid- to senior-level technical staff from national statistics offices, national planning offices, and agencies in North and Central Asian countries using or providing environmental information for national development strategies and planning. Participants were provided an opportunity to:
- Present their national context and experiences with respect to environment statistics,
- Understand the role and scope of statistical standards (SEEA) and guidelines (FDES), and how they can be used to address the SDGs,
- Understand the need and approaches to strategic planning and documenting the key datasets in the National Statistical System, and
- Discuss priorities for implementation and initiate work planning for improving environment statistics.
