REGISTRATION

Those who have received direct invitations to participate (by email) can click here to register by 12.00 (ICT, GMT+7) one working day before the session. Additional information and details on how to join the virtual discussions will be shared with registered participants shortly before the event. Requests for further clarifications may be directed to [email protected].

Focusing on the theme of “Accelerating action on, and delivery of, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in Asia and the Pacific”, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) will organise a series of virtual discussions targeting member States, the United Nations system, the development community in the region, and major groups and other stakeholders who would normally have attended the 7th Asia-Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development  between March 25-27 2020 in Bangkok.

In line with the agenda items of the 7th APFSD, the virtual discussions will provide a space to review regional perspectives on accelerating progress on the 2030 Agenda and explore the entry points for acceleration as identified in the Global Sustainable Development Report 2019.

These discussions will complement written inputs to the Chair’s Statement, to be collected separately.

Webinar for the preparation of 2020 Voluntary National Reviews

Speaking to Agenda item 3 (Linking national, regional and global dimensions of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development), this online event will aim to strengthen preparations for the 2020 VNRs, through peer-learning among the 14 volunteering countries from the Asia-Pacific region. The webinar will focus exchanging of experiences and lessons learned among volunteering countries, including taking stock of the institutions and stakeholders involved in the preparatory process which will enhance VNR reports and contribute towards a more consolidated report.

The 2-hour webinar will be organised on 24 March 2020 and will refer to existing pre-session documentation prepared for the APFSD. The webinar will be a closed event targeting member States and UN Resident Coordinators.

Webinar on the theme of accelerating transformation and regional progress on SDGs

Speaking to Agenda item 2 (Regional perspectives on accelerating progress on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development), this virtual discussion will bring the Chair of the 6th APFSD, the ESCAP Executive Secretary, representatives from ADB and UNDP and government officials and stakeholder groups together to share experiences, good practices and priority strategies for accelerating transformation in light of regional progress and against the background of social change, emerging technologies and regional and global trends.

The 2-hour webinar will be organised on 30 March 2020 and will draw on existing pre-session documentations prepared for the APFSD.

Webinars exploring the entry points for accelerated action

The 2019 United Nations Sustainable Development Goal summit identified six transformative entry points to accelerate the achievement of the SDGs. Under the overall coordination of ESCAP, UN system organisations have developed six entry point profiles looking at acceleration of the SDG implementation in the Asia-Pacific context, namely: 1. Human well-being and capabilities, 2. Sustainable and just economies, 3. Food systems and nutrition patterns, 4. Enhancing power grid connectivity to achieve affordable and clean energy for all, 5. Urban and peri-urban development and 6. Global environmental commons. In addition, the profiles provide an overview of progress at the regional and sub-national level on each entry point, as well as specific examples of acceleration against each entry point. The profiles also propose policy recommendations for enabling transformative change and accelerating achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals in Asia and the Pacific.

In order to inform registered participants of the APFSD on the relevance of each entry point and get broad support for the content of the profiles, six separate webinars will be organised with support from lead/co-lead agencies from within the UN system responsible for developing the entry point profiles.

In each of the webinars, organised between 31 March – 08 April 2020, the entry point profiles will be presented and discussed, and priority elements identified.

Consultation on Chair’s Statement

Based on messages from pre-session documents, outcomes of the virtual discussions and the report of the ongoing “Open-ended working group on the review of the conference structure of the Commission”, the Chair of the current APFSD Bureau will develop a Statement which will then be shared with member States for further deliberations.
