The Asia-Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development (APFSD) is the UN’s regional platform for follow-up and review to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, providing an important link between national and global processes. Reflecting the priorities and critical sustainable development issues of Pacific island countries is key to ensuring that the APFSD provides a meaningful multi-stakeholder platform for the Pacific. The Pacific Preparatory meeting for the APFSD was held from 24-25 September and provided an opportunity for the Pacific to identify key regional issues, challenges and opportunities that impact on the capacity of Pacific island countries to promote broad-based sustainable development while confronted by the impact of climate change and an increasing threat of natural disasters.
The theme of the 2019 High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) and APFSD is ‘Empowering people and ensuring inclusiveness and equality’ and the specific goals under review are SDG 4 (quality education), 8 (decent work and economic growth), 10 (reduced inequalities), 13 (climate action), and 16 (peace, justice and strong institutions). ESCAP, UNDP and DESA, with sub-regional organizations such as PIFS and SPC through the Pacific Roadmap for Sustainable Development, have been working to support Pacific countries in their follow-up and review for the 2030 Agenda. For the 2019 HLPF, a number of Pacific islands have registered to undertake a VNR including Fiji, Nauru, Palau, Tonga and Vanuatu. The HLPF theme and the cluster of goals under review (in particular SDG 13 on Climate Change) are highly relevant for the Pacific.
