High-level meeting on implementing reforms on protection from unemployment and NSTVET in the Philippines

6 Oct 2015
Manila, Philippines

Unemployment protection schemes provide income security to workers in the event of a loss of employment, while national systems of technical and vocational education and training (NSTVET) provide indispensable knowledge, skills and attitudes for a meaningful participation in the work force. By facilitating a more effective matching of workers with available jobs, improving the skills of the labour force and enhancing workers' employability, unemployment protection and NSTVET are important contributors of inclusive growth. The purpose of this high-level meeting was to discuss proposals for reform to policies in both areas in the Philippines, and to learn from experiences in other countries in Asia and the Pacific. The meeting was attended by representatives from the Philippines government, the private sector, academe, non-government organizations, and international development partners.

At the end of the Meeting, the participants affirmed their commitment, through a Declaration of Commitment, to continue tripartite dialogues in identifying suitable social protection scheme, and to link TVET programs to the needs of the labor market.
