BACKGROUND

The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) organised six virtual dialogues to identify opportunities to address air pollution in the Region. These dialogues focused on strengthening regional cooperation and facilitating a broader exchange of innovative air pollution solutions and best practices, including policies, innovative uses of data, emerging technologies and capacity needs.

Dialogues were held for East and North-East Asia (18 January 2022), South-East Asia (19 January 2022), South and South-West Asia (20 January 2022) and North and Central Asia (25 January 2022), in coordination with the respective Sub-regional Offices and the United Nations Environment Programme. In addition, two thematic dialogues were organised in all subregions, focusing on 1) Health and Gender Implications (3 December 2021) and 2) Data and Technologies for Air Pollution (27 January 2022).

Each sub-regional dialogue was structured in two segments:

1) High-level dialogue for senior officials focused on regional cooperation, including enhanced regional modalities.

2) Technical segment for other senior government officials, experts from academia and think tanks, representatives from international organisations and other relevant stakeholders from the respective sub-region.

The recommendations unpacked in the dialogues will be compiled in a policy brief that will be shared with member states to mainstream adoption of needed measures and effective regional cooperation.

This workshop on the outcomes of the Air Pollution in ASIA and the PACIFIC: Subregional Dialogue Series will be a platform to summarise and disseminate the main lessons learned during these discussions. Key recommendations that need to be taken forward immediately in the Region to effectively combat the adverse impacts of air pollution will be highlighted and open for discussion among speakers and participants.

Description

This workshop on the outcomes of the Air Pollution in ASIA and the PACIFIC: Subregional Dialogue Series will be a platform to summarise and disseminate the main lessons learned during these discussions. Key recommendations that need to be taken forward immediately in the Region to effectively combat the adverse impacts of air pollution will be highlighted and open for discussion among speakers and participants.

Objectives

  • Strengthen regional cooperation, including regional modalities and harmonised air quality standards, based on the WHO air quality guidelines
  • Address knowledge needs/gaps and mechanisms
  • Enhance the use of data and technologies to inform policies
  • Identify the most appropriate clean air solutions and means to accelerate implementation
  • Build capacity to ensure policy development/implementation

Expected Outcome

The side event will allow experts on mechanisms to mitigate air pollution in the Region to present their findings and engage with governments directly to identify actions that need to be urgently taken to reduce air pollution concentrations, exposure and impacts.

Discussions that occur in this workshop will help to further inform an upcoming Policy Brief on the outcomes of the Air Pollution in ASIA and the PACIFIC: Subregional Dialogue Series.
