Excellencies, distinguished participants, Ladies and gentlemen,

Thank you for inviting me to speak at this UN Energy side event at COP26.

It is important that we all work decisively to close the gap on SDG7 to ensure we deliver on the promise of sustainable energy for all.

Our collective ambition on climate change must increase to ensure we keep the 1.5-degree target within reach.

We need to plot a decisive course to net zero by mid-century, building on the foundations of achieving SDG 7 by 2030.

To get us to this future, the initiatives we will be discussing at this session – phasing out coal from our economies, moving to broad-scale application of renewables and the electrification of transport – will be indispensable.

We have supported our member States on SDG7 through the development of a regional roadmap for energy connectivity and helping countries to develop an optimal mix of policies to deliver on the SDG 7 targets.

And much of this story of low-carbon transformation will be written in the Asia-Pacific region, which I represent.

ESCAP is committed to supporting its member States to meet these challenges.

I wish you every success for this event.

Thank you very much.
