Bonn, Germany

By invitation only

In order to support the development of technical materials to build capacity in the preparation, submission and implementation of nationally appropriate mitigation actions (NAMAs), as requested by the parties at 18th Conference of the Parties (COP18), United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Economic Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN ESCAP), Waste Concern, South Pole Group and the UNFCCC have prepared a paper on “Valuing the sustainable development co-benefits of climate change mitigation actions: The case of the waste sector and recommendations for the design of nationally appropriate mitigation actions (NAMAs)”.

The paper uses the case of the waste sector to illustrate the co-benefits associated with certain typologies of projects, providing suggestions for the quantification and possible monetization of these benefits, and proposing recommendations for the design of NAMAs, including the role of government. The paper argues for a systematic valuation of the sustainable development co-benefits of climate change mitigation actions in order to prioritize actions that have high sustainable development impact, drawing from the experience of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and providing recommendations for the design of NAMAs.

The objective of the side event, held during the Bonn Climate Change Conference, 2015, was to launch the paper and discuss its findings, in order to generate debate and provide ideas for a methodological framework to assist developing countries to quantify, and to the extent possible, monetize co-benefits of mitigation actions.
