The observance of International Migrants Day 2020 in Asia and the Pacific is co-organized by ESCAP, the Regional United Nations Network on Migration and the Embassy of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. It will feature the launch of the Asia-Pacific Migration Report 2020, the first comprehensive UN system-wide assessment of the implementation of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration in Asia and the Pacific. The event will further serve as an opportunity for member States, stakeholders and members of migrant communities in the region to reflect on the implementation of the Global Compact for Migration, the impacts of COVID-19 on the lives of migrants and members of their families, and the status of preparations for the Asia-Pacific Regional Review of implementation of the Global Compact for Migration, scheduled for 10 to 12 March 2021.
Ms. Shahnaz Gazi, Charge d’Affairs a.i., Embassy of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh; other member States (TBC); and Ms. Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana, Executive Secretary of ESCAP will provide welcome and opening remarks, to be followed by multi-stakeholder panel discussions.
In view of the unprecedented situation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the event will be held in a hybrid format consisting of both a physical event at the UNCC, by separate invitation, and a virtual platform.
