MPDD Special Seminar on “Inclusive Finance”
MPDD Special Seminar on “Inclusive Finance” by Dr. Atiur Rahman, Governor, Bangladesh Bank, 16 February 2015, 15.00-16.00 hrs., Bangkok, Thailand
The large majority of the adult population, especially the poor and vulnerable, are typically excluded from core financial services---savings, credit, insurance and remittances---in the Asia-Pacific region. Despite progress, billions of adults in the region still lack access to reliable financial services and suffer from low financial literacy and capabilities. Dr. Atiur Rahman, a renowned Bangladeshi economist, will share his expertise in this important subject.
Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr. Atiur Rahman has recently received the ‘Central Bank Governor of the Year- Asia Pacific, 2015’ award by the London-based Financial Times owned magazine, ‘The Banker’ for his significant contribution towards promoting socially and environmentally responsible financing in Bangladesh without compromising macroeconomic stability. Prior to his assumption of the office of the Governor, he was Professor of Economics at the University of Dhaka, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Shamunnay, a centre for excellence in development research in Bangladesh, Director of Sonali Bank, the largest commercial bank in Bangladesh, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Janata Bank, and Chairman of the Credit Development Forum (CDF). He also had a long tenure as a Senior Research Fellow at the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS). He published extensively on the micro-finance revolution in Bangladesh and has been a well-known public figure advocating for a more humane style of development.
