The First Drafting Committee for the Asia-Pacific Plan of Action for Space Applications for Sustainable Development

31 May 2018 to 1 Jun 2018
Bangkok, Thailand

ESCAP organized the First Drafting Committee Meeting for the Asia-Pacific Plan of Action on Space Applications for Sustainable Development (2018-2030) from 31 May to 1 June 2018, in the United Nations Conference Center (UNCC), Bangkok, Thailand. The meeting was organized in collaboration with the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) of Thailand, who also arranged an additional technical visit on 2 June 2018 to GISTDA Space Krenovation Park in Sriracha, Chonburi Province, Thailand. During this meeting, members of the Committee discussed the draft Plan of Action, prepared by the secretariat and in line with suggestions on-going discussions since the 20th ICC on RESAP. Committee members also gave guidance on how to promote the use of space applications for the Regional Road Map for Implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Since 2012, ESCAP has led implementation of the Asia-Pacific Plan of Action for Applications of Space Technology and Geographic Information Systems for Disaster Risk Reduction and Sustainable Development (2012-2017). This initiative, which ended in 2017, has provided tremendous opportunities in the utilization of innovative space application tools and technologies to tackle our most pressing development challenges and support the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. In this connection, member States decided at the fifth session of the Committee on Disaster Risk Reduction, held on 10-12 October 2017 in Bangkok, to prepare the Asia-Pacific Plan of Action for Space Applications for Sustainable Development (2018-2030). Member States provided further guidance that the new action plan should provide enhanced contributions of space applications to ESCAP’s Regional Road Map for Implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in Asia and the Pacific. Member States also recommended that the Space Plan of Action (2018-2030) should be presented for adoption at a proposed third Ministerial Conference on Space Applications for Sustainable Development in Asia and the Pacific, to be held in October 2018.
