Asia-Pacific Regional Commemoration of the 2019 International Women’s Day: “Think equal, build smart, innovate for change”
The Asia-Pacific UN Regional Coordination Mechanism Thematic Working Group on Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women (TWG-GEEW), co-chaired by ESCAP and UN Women, organized the regional commemorative event to observe the International Women’s Day (IWD) on 8 March 2018 from 09:30 to 11:10 hours at the United Nations Conference Center in Bangkok.
In line with the 2019 global theme of the IWD “Think equal, build smart, innovate for change”, this year’s event featured an interactive dialogue among various stakeholders, including government representatives, diplomatic community, UN system, civil society and women’s organizations, as well as innovators and social entrepreneurs. The objective of the commemorative event was to showcase good practices and innovative solutions that help advance gender equality in Asia and the Pacific, as well as to engage diverse stakeholders in discussions on the ways in which innovation can remove barriers and drive positive changes to accelerate progress for gender equality.
The IWD 2019 highlighted innovation and technology as one of the key drivers for achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The achievement of the 2030 Agenda and SDGs requires transformative shifts, integrated approaches and new solutions, particularly when it comes to advancing gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls. Based on current trajectories, existing interventions will not suffice to achieve a Planet 50-50 by 2030. Innovative approaches that disrupt “business as usual” are central to removing structural barriers and ensuring that no woman and no girl is left behind.
