Asia-Pacific Launch of the UN Disability Inclusion Strategy: Making the Right Real in Our Region

3 Dec 2019
Bangkok, Asia Pacific
Open meeting

Since 1992, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) has been annually observed on 3 December around the world. The year 2019 is of special significance as the Secretary General launched the United Nations Disability Inclusion Strategy (UNDIS) to provide a foundation for system-wide disability inclusion throughout the United Nations system, in support of the realization of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Sendai Framework on Disaster Risk Reduction, 2015-2030, Agenda for Humanity and others.

On the occasion of the 2019 International Day of Persons with Disabilities, ESCAP will launch the UNDIS to express its highest-level commitment to UNDIS implementation. ESCAP’s commitment to the implementation of UNDIS will enable effective and meaningful disability mainstreaming through policy and operations across all ESCAP divisions and facilitate synergies to collaborate with other UN entities, organizations of persons with disabilities and the private sector to create impacts on disability-inclusive development in the region. Furthermore, the event will incorporate the Executive Secretary’s speech and a panel discussion on the value of disability-inclusion in the workplace.

Finally, at this event, ESCAP will showcase videos of persons with disabilities in their workplace as a part of a broader campaign organized with the Office of Human Resources (OHR) New York #this is My workplace campaign. This will be broadcast live on youtube, see: The purpose of the campaign is to showcase the personal empowerment of persons with disabilities that stems from ownership of their workplace. The theme reflects the UNDIS goals of creating and promoting a truly inclusive culture in our workplaces where everyone can thrive and realize their full potential.
