08 March 2016 | By invitation only

The 2016 theme for International Women’s Day is “Planet 50-50 by 2030: Step It Up for Gender Equality”. The United Nations, through the Regional Coordination Mechanism, observed the day on 8 March, building momentum for the effective implementation of Gender Equality principles and targets of the Sustainable Development Goals. The commemoration equally focused on commitments made to advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment by Heads of State at the Global Leaders’ Meeting on the sides of the UN General Assembly in September 2015, and other existing commitments on gender equality, including the Beijing Platform for Action.

The Regional Commemoration of the International Women’s Day was organized by the Asia-Pacific UN RCM Thematic Working Group on Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women (TWG-GEEW), co-chaired by ESCAP and UN Women.

The event brought together different stakeholders to discuss key challenges, gaps and opportunities to advance gender equality towards achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
