ADB-ESCAP Aid for Trade Side Event on Trade Facilitation for a More Inclusive and Connected Asia and the Pacific
The side event was held as part of the 6th Global Review on Aid for Trade. After a keynote address from WCO Secretary General Kunio Mikuriya, a joint report on trade facilitation for a more inclusive and connected Asia and the Pacific was introduced by ADB and ESCAP, followed by a panel discussion.
The report provides an overview of implementation of trade facilitation and paperless trade measures in Asia and the Pacific based on the preliminary results of a global survey conducted by ESCAP and other UN Regional Commissions in 2017. Progress made through various ADB-led subregional initiatives on trade facilitation and connectivity are also highlighted. The report highlights the importance of enabling SMEs participation in digital trade and e-commerce as a way to make trade more inclusive. In this context, all countries in Asia and the Pacific are encouraged to become party to the new Framework Agreement on Facilitation of Cross-Border Paperless Trade in Asia and the Pacific, as a tool to support and accelerate the development of digital trade procedures and the better implementation of the WTO Trade Facilitation Agreement.
