Planning for sustainable cross-border power system connectivity

The 14th Meeting of the Expert Working Group on Energy Connectivity is organized as part of the theme 'Strategic Planning for an Accelerated Energy Transition'.

The meeting will discuss in-depth the annual ESCAP flagship Regional Trends Report on Energy for Sustainable Development 2024. This year’s report, in addition to discussing regional trends in power connectivity, will include a focus on the implementation of the Regional Road Map on Power System Connectivity. The Regional Road Map provides an agreed reference framework for planning power grid integration from 2020 to 2035 and proposes nine detailed strategies, key milestones, time frames and responsible entities for realizing each strategy. The Expert Working Group on Energy Connectivity meeting will assess the progress on the milestones of the Regional Road Map strategies and guide the next steps (including the possible need to update strategy milestones milestones) of the Regional Road Map’s implementation.

Expected Outcomes

The aim of the meeting is to gather perspectives from member States, regional organizations, private sector and academia experts on the opportunities and challenges of strategic planning for energy transition. The key expected outcomes include:

  1. Knowledge update on emerging issues and trends in energy planning.
  2. Identification of challenges and opportunities to advance the energy transition through energy system planning and enabling frameworks
  3. Regional cooperation opportunities for countries to enhance the energy planning process in support of SDG 7 and regional energy connectivity.
