Background
About: In alignment with the South-South and Triangular Collaboration Programme on Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) among Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand, and Viet Nam (CLTV), the United Nations ESCAP is committed to strengthening the capabilities of government officials to develop policies that support the scaling up of start-ups in the region.
Objective: This webinar is part of ESCAP's advisory support on policies to promote private sector engagement in science, technology, and innovation for CLTV. It aims to equip policymakers in CLTV countries with the tools to formulate policies that foster start-up growth and address challenges such as scaling and early market demand.
Subject: The webinar will feature insights from seasoned professionals in the start-up sector and focus on two primary topics:
- Procurement Policy for Start-Ups: Exploring how government procurement policies can prioritize and secure initial market demand for start-ups. Case studies of governments using procurement to bolster domestic industries will be examined.
- Scaling up from Initial Seed Funding: Delving into the mechanisms through which governments can aid start-ups in transitioning from initial seed funding to later stages. Exploration of policies, instruments, and international examples that facilitate movement from angel/seed to Series A and Series B funding rounds.
Format: The webinar will be organized as two interactive segments featuring senior policymakers and subject-matter experts from the CLTV region and abroad, who will share their lived experiences and insights regarding policies, tools, and best practices that have shown success in supporting the scaling up of start-ups. Participants will also have the opportunity to submit questions and share insights that can inform the drafting process of the workbook on policies to promote private sector engagement in STI.
