During the ECOSOC Forum on Financing for Development Follow-Up 2023, the five Regional Commissions of the United Nations - namely, the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), the Economic Commission for Europe (ECE), the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), and the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) - hosted a Side Event | Rethinking public debt policies for the SDGs: Regional perspectives last 18 April 2023, at 13.30 - 14:30 hours at Trusteeship Council Chamber, United Nations Headquarters, New York.
The potential policy options and approaches to deal with sovereign debt distress while keeping in view the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and long-term climate ambitions were discussed. Given a vast diversity among different regions of the world, this event also discussed policy experiences and lessons which can inform policy formulation and implementation in other regions. It also discussed ways by which enhanced multilateral cooperation, with the support of United Nations Regional Commissions, can facilitate member States and the international development community in taking their initiatives forward.
