International Agricultural trade is one of a key ingredient to economic growth, employment and poverty reduction. Being able to analyses agricultural trade data sets can help countries to understand better their trade with other countries and devise better policies.

The ability to use R for agricultural trade analysis is important for decision making related to agricultural trade policies. This workshop provides a basic foundation using R for international agricultural trade. The workshop uses a combination of asynchronous training where participants work in their own time and synchronous training where there is a live training conducted by invited instructor.

The asynchronous training includes the topic of R basics, loading data and subsetting more data, subsetting and loops in R, and graphs. An online exam is required to ensure all delegates have a sound and fundamental understanding in using basic R. The synchronous training covers using R to analyze agricultural trade which includes basic trade flow analysis, trade flow indicator and how to deal with unreported trade data.

Participants

Government officers related to agricultural trade policy from Office of Agricultural Economics, Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives and related government agencies are the main participants of this workshop. In order to prepare for the workshop and maximize the benefits from the online training workshop, participants are expected to complete asynchronous sessions (online self-study) and get familiar with using basic R in advance.  The number of participants will be restricted to 30-35 participants so that appropriate support in online training can be guaranteed.

PRELIMINARY PROGRAM

Two-hour and a half virtual workshop sessions consist of short lectures followed by a small group discussion and exercise in breakout virtual groups. Training materials will be posted on through a google drive to share with all participants before the workshop starts. The preliminary program of the workshop is as follows.

Session 1: Asynchronous (1-15 October, 2021) (Self-Study)

      After reading and reviewing these modules, delegates must take an online pre-course exam (Pass rate is 70% to move to phase 2).

Session 2: Zoom – Synchronous (2.5 hrs. on Thursday, 21st October 2021)

Session 3: Zoom – Synchronous (2.5 hrs. on Thursday, 28th October 2021)

VENUE

Two-hour and a half workshop on October 21 and 28, 2021 will be conducted via Zoom program. Virtual Meeting platform is to be arranged by Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics, Faculty of Economics, Kasetsart University with participants joining remotely. Meeting ID and Password will be provided to the participants in advance.
