The Asia-Pacific Stats Café Series on "Big Data Governance" was held on Monday, 16 August 2021, 12:00-13:30 hours (GMT+7).

This Stats Café explored governance issues related to the use of big data for official statistics, including privacy, ethics, legislation and coordination, and how the role of the NSOs in government-wide digital strategies, national data infrastructure and data sharing can be leveraged for expanded uptake of big data in statistical operations.

Rikke Munk Hansen is the Chief of Economic and Environment Statistics Section and the officer-in-charge of Statistics Division, ESCAP. She has worked with sustainable development in Asia and the Pacific during the past 21 years, including on statistics, the energy sector, and programme management and evaluation. Rikke manages ESCAP’s work on economic and environment statistics, including its efforts to develop guidance on disaster-related statistics. Rikke holds a Master’s degree in mathematics and computer science from Aalborg University, Denmark and the Technical University of Eindhoven, the Netherlands.

Simon is the Head of Data Ethics and Research Governance at the UK Statistics Authority. In this role Simon leads the development and provision of research governance frameworks and services providing efficient and effective research governance across the UK research community and provides strategic advice to independent research governance panels. Simon also leads the work of the UK Statistics Authority’s Centre for Applied Data Ethics, which provides applied data ethics guidance, training and support to researchers and statisticians across the analytical community and an international research programme focusing on ethical issues in the use of data for research and statistics. Prior to this appointment, Simon played a lead role in the policy design and operationalisation of the Statistics and Research strands of the Digital Economy Act 2017 and led research teams using big data to improve statistical outputs.

Mr. Pramana is currently working as an Associate Professor at the Computational Statistics Department, Politeknik Statistika STIS Indonesia, and also as a Coordinator of Statistical Model Development and Big Data Team, BPS Statistics Indonesia. He is leading a multidisciplinary team responsible for developing big data for official statistics. This team combines academic, R&D, and implementation of big data for official statistics in BPS.
