The United Nations Special Programme for the Economies of Central Asia (SPECA) was launched in 1998 to strengthen intra-regional cooperation in Central Asia and its integration into the world economy. The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) jointly provide overall support to the activities under this Programme. Among SPECA’s areas of work is the Thematic Working Group (TWG on KBD; formerly known as Project Working Group on Knowledge-based Development, PWG on KBD). As outlined in the Planned Programme of Work of the Seventh Session of the SPECA PWG on KBD, ESCAP is responsible for capacity development on the utilisation of ICT for disaster risk reduction in 2016.

In this regards, ESCAP is organising, jointly with ECE, the Eighth Session of the SPECA TWG on KBD, hosted by Almaty Centre for Center for Emergency Situations and Disaster Risk Reduction (CESDRR), Kazakhstan. Given the overall development framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) goals, this meeting aims to address the emerging requirement for enhanced ICT connectivity in general and e-resilience in particular, as a basis for resilient business and economic development among the SPECA countries.

Note: Prior to the eighth session of the SPECA TWG on KBD, ESCAP and UNECE will jointly organize a technical workshop on “Resilient ICT Connectivity for the Knowledge Economy, SDGs and the WSIS Goals”, on 20-21 of September 2016, to be hosted by CESDRR.
