Abstract

The Study on border crossing practices in international railway transport documents the processes at the selected railway border crossings in the region and proposes measures to enhance the efficiency of railway border crossings. The railway border crossing processes play vital role in facilitation of international railway transport. Delays caused due to completion of border crossing formalities leads to increase transit time for railway transport, adversely affecting its competitiveness of railway transport compared to other modes.

The legal arrangements on international railway transport, customs and other regulatory border crossing requirements determine the operations and formalities at the railway border crossing. The divergence in customs formalities required for international railway transport among countries makes a case for their harmonization through a regional arrangement.

The study is expected to increase knowledge of the railway and border officials of the member countries regarding good practices and options to reduce border crossing time to enhance reliability of freight trains.
