Abstract

Nine out of 20 top container carriers are from Asia, limited to a few countries in the region. Shipping services have been recognized as an important element of economic growth and unless concerted action is taken, national shipping services would be marginalized in the face of global competition. This volume is a collection of papers on the international shipping environment, determining shipping policy objectives, development of national shipping capabilities, shipping fleets and access to shipping markets, ship registration, public and private sector participation in shipping, competitive shipping services and the profess of formulating and implementing shipping policy.
