The present document provides an overview of issues facing member states in the light of more frequent and serious natural disasters affecting Asia and the Pacific. These extreme events have devastating consequences on development. They also highlight the inter-linkage among economic, social and environmental factors in the development process, and thus result in the need to apply comprehensive solutions into development strategies. The present document contains a review of the benefits and costs of mainstreaming disaster risk reduction into the broader framework of multi-sectoral socioeconomic development and presents strategic approaches for building resilience into the economy, critical sectors and supply chains, and ecosystems, as well as into communities.
