Strategic Collaboration Agreed Between ESCAP and UNU-IAS
The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) has entered into a new collaborative agreement with the United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS). The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Kazuhiko Takemoto, UNU-IAS Director and Dr. Shamshad Akhtar, United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of ESCAP on 20 September 2017.
With this Agreement, both parties have committed to enhance the effectiveness and impact of their respective work on environment and development issues, particularly in the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in Asia and the Pacific. ESCAP and UNA-IAS plan to promote a science-policy interface in the region through joint analytical work and the development of evidence-based instruments that support policymakers and other stakeholders to achieve the 2030 Agenda. The primary focus of collaboration will include a regional platform, integrated approaches for Sustainable Development Goal planning, and evidence-based policymaking, monitoring, follow up and review.
As the first flagship project, both parties are currently developing guidelines to strengthen multi-stakeholder partnerships aimed at supporting the achievement of the 2030 Agenda by national governments. A related workshop was jointly organized last March in Bangkok at the Asia-Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development (APFSD) 2017. The guidelines are expected to be published at the next APFSD in 2018.
