The International Conference on Inclusive Science, Technology and Innovation Policies for Promoting the Transfer of New and Emerging Technologies in Water and Energy Sectors convened in Bangkok today to discuss inclusive policies and strategies promoting the transfer and adoption of innovative technologies in water and energy sectors.

The conference was organized by the Asian and Pacific Centre for Transfer of Technology (APCTT), a regional institution of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, in partnership with the Ministry of Science and Technology, Thailand and Thailand Institute of Scientific and Technological Research (TISTR). Senior government officials, experts and representatives from the private sector shared challenges and opportunities for the development, deployment, accessibility and affordability of innovative technologies in the closely related water and energy sectors.

Water and energy are one of the most important resources for societies around the world. Demands for these resources are increasing rapidly due to population growth, income and changing lifestyles. In her welcome remarks, Ms. Michiko Enomoto, Head of APCTT, emphasized the need to promote green technologies in water and energy sectors to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Leveraging technology and innovation to achieve SDG6 on Clean Water and Sanitation and SDG7 on Affordable and Clean Energy requires inclusive policies that ensure no one is left behind. Understanding the complex relationship between water and energy resources has become critically important to the development of a sustainable and secure future for the Asia-Pacific region.

“We need policies to ensure good technology transfer and inclusiveness as well as international cooperation to achieve these goals together,” said Dr. Pathom Sawanpantalert, Deputy Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Science and Technology, Thailand.

Policy recommendations developed at the conference will further feed into the 14th Session of the Governing Council of Asian and Pacific Centre for Transfer of Technology (APCTT), which takes place from 28 to 29 November, as well as assist APCTT in developing focused programme activities to support member States in harnessing new and emerging technologies in the water and energy sectors.
