ESCAP and SCO: Prime Ministers meeting of the Shanghai Corporation Organization (SCO)
In her statement to the Prime Ministers meeting of the Shanghai Corporation Organization (SCO) in Sochi, Russian Federation, UN Under-Secretary General and Executive Secretary of ESCAP, Dr. Shamshad Akhtar highlighted the importance of fostering the SCO-ESCAP partnership to help both organizations leverage respective complementarities, competence and mandates for the benefit of Member States.
The 16th Meeting of the SCO Heads of Government Council was attended by the Prime Minister of India Sushma Swaraj, Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Bakytzhan Sagintayev, Prime Minister of China Li Keqiang, Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan Sapar Isakov, Prime Minister of Pakistan Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Prime Minister of Russia Dmitry Medvedev, Prime Minister of Tajikistan Kokhir Rasulzoda, and the Prime Minister of Uzbekistan Abdulla Aripov.
In the spirit of friendship and cooperation, the heads of delegations exchanged views on the current economic situation in the region and the world, and also discussed a wide range of economic and humanitarian cooperation issues within the SCO. Subsequently, they agreed on specific measures to enhance the efficiency of cooperation in these areas.
Dr. Akhtar also met with SCO Secretary-General Rashid Alimov on the sidelines of the meeting to discuss ways to further strengthen cooperation between the SCO and ESCAP in a wide range of areas, including the Agreement on International Road Transport Facilitation.
