Executive Secretary discusses SDG implementation on visit to Malaysia
ESCAP Executive Secretary Armida Alisjahbana visited Malaysia on 14 March as part of her series of official visits to member States.
In a bilateral meeting, Ms. Alisjahbana and Malaysia’s Foreign Minister Saifuddin Abdullah exchanged ideas on reinvigorating the country’s engagement with ESCAP and regional cooperation on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). She highlighted Malaysia’s key role within ASEAN and how it can share good practices in areas such as sustainable urban development.
Ms. Alisjahbana also held a roundtable with representatives of Malaysian think tanks and academics on developing collaborative networks to transform research on sustainable development into concrete action for the benefit of communities on the ground. She met with UN Resident Coordinator Mr. Stefan Priesner and the UN Country Team to discuss their national-level initiatives and strategies to accelerate achievement of the SDGs, and how these can be better aligned with regional efforts.
During her visit, the Executive Secretary also took the opportunity to speak with the Malaysian media and share her perspectives on, among others, ESCAP’s work on social development issues as well as regional trends, challenges and opportunities.
