Executive Secretary promotes economic cooperation and sustainable energy in the Russian Federation
On 7 and 8 June, Executive Secretary of ESCAP Armida Alisjahbana traveled to the Russian Federation for bilateral meetings and to participate in the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.
At the Forum, Ms. Alisjahbana was a keynote speaker in two sessions related to clean energy and regional cooperation. In a session on the impact of natural gas on the economy and climate, the Executive Secretary discussed the expanding role of natural gas to provide clean energy in the transport sector, which accounts for one-fourth of the region’s energy consumption. She further highlighted that harnessing this potential will be key to the region’s efforts to transition to sustainable energy.
In a meeting on cooperation between ASEAN and the Eurasian Economic Union, she emphasized that reducing trade costs will be essential to sustaining the rapid trade growth between the two economic zones in the last decade. Ms. Alisjahbana articulated that approaches like paperless trade and trade digitalization can facilitate further savings on cross-border transactions.
On the sidelines of the Forum, Ms. Alisjahbana signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Eurasian Development Bank. The agreement serves to continue cooperation between ESCAP and the Bank, while promoting regional integration through infrastructure investment.
Ms. Alisjahbana also held meetings with development organizations and key government representatives, including H.E. Vladimir Norov, Secretary General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization; H.E. Sergey Glazyev, Advisor to the President of the Russian Federation on regional economic integration; H.E. Yevgeny Dietrich, Minister of Transport and H.E. Yury Tsvetkov, Deputy Minister of Transport; H.E. Anton Inyutsyn, Deputy Minister of Energy; Mr. Andrey Belyaninov, Chairman of the Management Board, Eurasian Development Bank; H.E. Tatyana Valovaya, Member of the Board – Minister in Charge of Integration and Macroeconomics, Eurasian Economic Commission; H.E. Sergey Vershinin, Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation; and Mr. Vladimir Yakunin, President of the Dialogue of Citizens Research Institute.
