Managing rapidly growing cities and their urban regions is one of the most critical challenges facing Asia and the Pacific, especially so with regards to urban development and natural resources. Energy, water, and food are the resources most essential to sustain development efforts, and they are also the most vulnerable to future demand.
In Asia-Pacific, managing the resource footprint of cities calls for institutional coordination and other forms of collaboration - which has rarely been evident in policy or practice. The majority of cities/municipal administrations in Asia-Pacific plan and manage along sectorial lines and within municipal boundaries; consequently, they are unable to fully realize the interaction and synergies between water, energy and food security and the potential co-benefits arising from integrated resource management.
It is against this background, the project on “Integrated Resource Management in Asian Cities: the Urban Nexus” has been assisting 12 cities in seven countries in Asia to adopt a “nexus” approach that aims to integrate planning and management processes across the energy, water and food sectors. The project is implemented by GIZ in partnership with ESCAP and ICLEI and with funding from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
The project has organized six regional workshops to date, providing a platform for cities to exchange experiences and for multi- stakeholder dialogue. The Seventh Regional Workshop aims to develop policy recommendations to help local governments adopt nexus initiatives, integrate the nexus approach in national policies, and link nexus activities at the local level to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the New Urban Agenda of the United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Development (Habitat III), and the Paris Climate Agreement.
An estimated 100 international and local participants will attend the workshop, including
• Local government officials from the Urban Nexus partner cities.
• National and sub-national government officials from the countries of the partner cities from relevant departments, line ministries and provincial governments.
• Representatives of city networks, international organizations, international financing institutions, academic organizations, private sector enterprises and other relevant stakeholders with an interest in integrated resource management.
