Regional Commemoration of the United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation in Asia and the Pacific

12 Sep 2018
United Nations Conference Centre, Bangkok , Thailand

Time: 09:00 – 12:00 hours
Organizers: United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC), United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), and the Government of Thailand

South-South cooperation represents solidarity among the countries of the South and has been driving cooperation among developing countries in political, economic, social and cultural domains for the past six decades. It has become an important modality to deliver the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The Asia and the Pacific region is home to some of the largest South-South cooperation providers in the world as well as to many developing countries benefiting from this international development cooperation modality.

The UN General Assembly recognized the importance of South-South cooperation by designating 12 September – the date of adoption of the Buenos Aires Plan of Action for Promoting and Implementing Technical Cooperation among Developing Countries in 1978 – as the United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation. Every year on 12 September the international development community world-wide celebrates the United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation.

Against this backdrop, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC) and the Government of Thailand will jointly hold a regional Commemoration of the United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation on Wednesday, 12 September 2018, from 09:00 to 12:00 hours at the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok.

Building on the outcomes of the Regional Consultation on South-South Cooperation in Asia and the Pacific and the inauguration of the regional “DG Forum” in June 2018, this year the United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation aims to:

  • Commemorate the fortieth anniversary of the adoption of the Buenos Aires Plan of Action
  • Raise awareness on the effective utilization of the existing South-South modalities in the Asia-Pacific region to accelerate progress towards the 2030 Agenda across the region
  • Enhance coordination of actions and networking of the South-South cooperation players in the region in the lead-up to the Second United Nations High-level Conference on South-South Cooperation next March in Buenos Aires (BAPA+40).
