Having significant potentials for harnessing complementarities in energy resource endowment as well as energy production and consumption, North-East Asian countries have been highly interested in enhancing power interconnection in the subregion. With a growing emphasis on clean environment and carbon emission reduction to achieve the Paris Agreement, Sustainable Development Goals as well as national targets, energy cooperation would also enable the subregion to promote greater renewable energy penetration and reduce carbon emissions of power systems. In this regard, various proposals, initiatives and studies have suggested establishing a multistakeholder platform to facilitate power interconnections and cooperation through sharing a vision and strategic direction, and accelerating project development.
Against this backdrop, the North-East Asia Regional Power Interconnection and Cooperation Forum 2018 is held to discuss on-going processes and studies on power interconnection and launching of a multistakeholder platform for dialogue and cooperation. The Forum is jointly organized by United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), the Ministry of Energy of Mongolia, China Electricity Council (CEC), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea and the Asian Development Bank (ADB), in collaboration with Energy System Institute (ESI) of the Russian Federation, Global Energy Interconnection Development and Cooperation Organization (GEIDCO), Renewable Energy Institute (REI) of Japan, and Greater Tumen Initiative (GTI).
