Ministerial Side Event: Community empowerment and participatory policy planning to reduce tsunami and water-related disaster risk

27 May 2019
Bangkok, Asia Pacific
By invitation only

Organized jointly by the Government of Japan, the ESCAP secretariat, and the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR), this ministerial side event will highlight the importance of community empowerment and inclusive planning to address risks associated with tsunamis and other complex water-related disasters.

Being held against the backdrop of widening inequalities and sharply rising disaster risks, as evidenced in the 2017 ESCAP Asia-Pacific Disaster Report, the side event will see ministers and senior officials from the region share knowledge and experiences on successful practices, to enable formulation of local and national disaster risk mitigation policies and strategies which take into account the unique community needs to achieve Target E of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–2030 that calls for a substantial increase in number of countries with national and local disaster risk reduction strategies by 2020.
