The First Pacific Workshop on Multi-Hazard Risk Assessment and Early Warning Systems with Applications of Space and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is organized in Nadi, Fiji from 13 to 15 September 2016 in collaboration with Fiji’s National Disaster Management Office, the Geoscience Division of the Pacific Community (SPC), the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), and the Government of Japan.
The workshop is an initial activity of the new project entitled “Strengthening Multi-Hazard Risk Assessment and Early Warning Systems with Applications of Space and Geographic Information Systems in Pacific Island Countries”. The project aims to strengthen the capacity of multi-hazard assessment and early warning systems by using space technology and GIS applications, and to promote Pacific regional cooperation platforms on multi-hazard assessment and early warning systems.
The key objectives of the workshop are to provide a forum for Pacific policymakers to (1) share initial findings from the gap-needs analysis of multi-hazard risk assessment, early warning systems, and use of GIS for disaster management in the Pacific region, (2) deliberate with regional experts on policies, good practice, capacity building, and Pacific regional cooperation, and (3) discuss Pacific strategies and work plans (3-5 years), including upcoming one-month training programmes.
