First Meeting of the Expert Group on Disaster-related Statistics in Asia and the Pacific
The Information and Communications Technology and Disaster Risk Reduction Division, the Statistics Division, and the Subregional Office for East and North-East Asia of ESCAP, together with the International Research Institute of Disaster Science (IRIDeS) of Tohoku University, are organizing the first meeting of the Expert Group on Disaster-related Statistics in Asia and the Pacific.
Constituted under ESCAP Commission resolution 70/2, experts from Governments, regional and international organizations as well as research institutes from the field of statistics and disaster risk reduction come together to discuss and develop a basic range of disaster-related statistics. The outcome of this work is expected to strengthen evidence-based policy making in disaster risk management, and contribute to the monitoring and reporting of a disaster risk management component of the forthcoming sustainable development goals and post 2015 framework for disaster risk reduction.
Experts will establish the scope of a basic range of disaster-related statistics including i) defining and classifying disaster events, ii) determining basic disaster impact statistics, and iii) identifying a framework for developing statistical standards and for the compilation and dissemination of those statistics.
