The integrated intermodal transport systems can bring several benefits such as: optimal use of existing transport capacities and infrastructure; support to development of rural areas by strengthening their links with national and regional transport networks; and promotion of sustainable development by ensuring optimal balance among its economic, social and environmental dimensions.
Though many countries in the region are taking steps to plan and implement the integrated intermodal transport systems in their countries, yet there is no clear framework/methodology to support the country initiatives in this direction. There is also wide variation in capacity of the countries to plan and implement integrated intermodal transport systems with some at comparatively advance level and others just starting the processes and therefore need support.
Keeping in view the aforesaid, the above captioned Expert Group Meeting on Development of Integrated Intermodal Transport Systems has the objectives to:
· Share experiences among countries in planning and operationalizing integrated intermodal transport systems;
· Identify key issues/challenges in planning and implementing such systems; and
· Discuss and finalize the framework/methodology for planning and operationalizing integrated intermodal transport systems.
