Space applications provide powerful solutions to help accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This side event was organized by the Government of Indonesia in collaboration with ESCAP and 10 space agencies, UN agencies, and universities at the 10th Asia-Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development. The side event featured concrete initiatives by the youth and other stakeholders to accelerate the achievement of SDGs in Asia and the Pacific using innovative space applications for such goals as clean water and sanitation, clean energy, and sustainable cities and communities. It also showcased partnerships and initiatives by governments, UN agencies and universities that aim to inspire and build the capacity of stakeholders, especially the young people, to increase their involvement in space activities for SDGs.

After the keynote statements by H.E. Mr. Rachmat Budiman, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary and Permanent Representative of Indonesia to ESCAP and Ms. Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Secretary of ESCAP, youth- and stakeholder-led space science and technology innovations, as accelerators of SDG achievement were highlighted.  In implementation of the Jakarta Ministerial Declaration on Space Applications for Sustainable Development in Asia and the Pacific, practical suggestions on how the involvement of young people in space science can be scaled up and supported through partnerships were  also discussed.

The side event was followed by a networking event on space applications to further share and exchange information on ongoing initiatives by universities and space agencies, as well as their plans for supporting capacity development.
