Dimentia Village "Hogeway"
Co-founded by a group of nursing home managers in 2009, Hogeway is operated as a "nursing home" within the Dutch governmental system. However, rather than being a building or a compound, this "nursing home" is an entire 4-acre neighbourhood with residential buildings and other facilities for everyday life such as supermarket, restaurant and hair salon. Only severe dementia patients who need 24-hour care are admitted to live there, and the residents are free to walk and do anything inside the village, including participating in various organized activities (cooking, baking, playing music, etc) and receiving family members and friends for a visit. All the staff in the village, including shop attendants, are trained to work with severe dementia patients, and for the 152 residents, there are twice as many care givers inside the village.
