A Window to the World

A window on the world: UNIS exhibition in Viet Nam.

UNIS Bangkok has set up information counters in some of the seven countries and territories in South-East Asia which UNIS covers for the Department of Public Information  (DPI): Cambodia; Hong Kong, China; Lao Peoples' Democratic Republic; Malaysia; Singapore, Thailand and Viet Nam.

UNIS routes U.N. information through UNDP offices in Lao PDR, Cambodia, Malaysia and Viet Nam. Media, NGOs and other interested parties can visit the UNDP and pick up UNIS publications, among other things.  In Hong Kong, The Foreign Correspondent Club can provide the newest UNIS publications, upon request. The British Council in Viet Nam displayed in January 1998 an exhibition about ESCAP and handed out different materials about the U.N.

Asian UNAs Discuss Human Rights, U.N. Reform

The regional Conference of the UN Associations (UNA) in Asia and Pacific, held in Beijing in September 1997, drew great attention from the Chinese media and was widely covered by many leading Chinese newspapers, magazines, radio and TV stations. The World Federation of the UNAs (WFUNA), including many UNAs in Asia, face financial difficulties. The Conference adopted a resolution expressing "grave concern" over this but affirming the need to maintain WFUNA Headquarters in Geneva with a Secretary General in Charge.

In his address, Mr. H.A. Halim, President of the WFUNA, said developing countries today were being marginalized in the world decision-making process. The problem of human rights was getting more attention than at any time since the Universal Declaration was adopted in 1948, he said. "This is an area of concern for all nations and their provocation is of vital importance for humanity at large. ... Protection of human rights should not impose conditionalities but should be addressed on the basis of universality, impartiality and non-selectivity", said Mr. Halim.

On UN reform, Mr. Halim said "the UN need not and cannot do everything. Its uniqueness and comparative advantage lies in the fact that it is global in its mandate and is universal in its membership".

Mr. Chuan Leekpai, Prime Minister of Thailand, responds to the framed cartoon showing him being "held up" by the economic crisis in Thailand. The cartoon was given to him by Mr. Adrianus Mooy, Executive Secretary of ESCAP, at the Commission session in April.

Calling all NGOs

The 1998 Annual DPI/NGO Conference will be held from 16 to 18 September at the U.N. in New York. It will focus on the Universal Declaration on Human Rights and its impact on societies around the world. The Department of Public Information (DPI) would like to engage as many NGOs as possible in the Conference, not only those working in the field of human rights but also those that focus on youth, health and women. Speakers will be sought from all parts of the world.

Interested NGOs should begin the process of applying for visas to the United States. The NGO Section maintains a website at: www.un.org/moreInfo/ngolink with information about the conference.
