Directory of Women's Periodicals in Asia and the Pacific, 1997, 30 pages

One of the recommendations in the Platform for Action adopted at the Fourth World Wide Conference on Women in Beijing, 1995, is the encouragement and recognition of women's media networks as a means of information and exchange of views. This directory, an updated version of the original publication issued in 1989, covers periodicals published in English in the Asian and Pacific region and contains a list of 217 titles of periodicals published by various organizations in 21 countries.

Human Rights and Legal Status of Women in the Asian and Pacific Region
Studies on Women in Development, 1, 1997, 68 pages

The Jakarta declaration and Plan of Action adopted at the Second Asian and Pacific Ministerial Conference on Women in Development and the Beijing Platform for Action adopted at the Fourth World Conference on Women, identified the protection and promotion of women's rights as a critical area of concern. It is against this background that this monograph, the first in a series entitled Studies on Women in Development, reviewing the approaches in national legal systems to women's status and their human rights, was prepared under the ESCAP project "Promotion of Women's Rights as Human Rights".

Improving the Access of Women to Formal Credit and Financial Institutions: Windows of Opportunity, 1997, 187 pages

With limited education and skill, and few formal employment opportunities, women in least developed countries often turn to self-employment as a means of supporting their families. However, access to credit is often denied them. In the last decade, programme to ensure greater access to credit facilities have been initiated by governments, non-governmental organizations and donor agencies. The eight country studies - Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Indonesia, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Myanmar, Nepal, and Pakistan - and the regional overview paper included in this volume, highlight these programmes, discuss problems related to the access of women to credit in the Asian and Pacific least developed countries and recommend remedial measures.

Report of the Regional Workshop on Women in Urban Local Governments in South Asia, Allahabad, India, 1997, 48 pages

The workshop had as its objective to develop coordinated regional action programmes for the advancement of women in urban local governments as a follow-up to the Beijing Conference and to strengthen indigenous, regional institutions to provide support to local groups promoting advancement of women in urban local governments, and brought together participants working on human settlements and women's issues from seven countries: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and the Philippines.

Working with Women in Poverty: Nine Innovative Approaches Submitted for the ESCAP HRD Award, 1996, 66 pages

The publication comprises nine case studies represented outstanding work of individual and organizations in "HRD (human resources development) for women in extreme poverty" in various fields, including health promotion, social support, income-generation, education and housing for women. The work of each case study takes into full account the poor women's point of view and recognizes that promoting their employment is underlining goal for all programmes for women.
