Manual on GIS for Planners and Decision Makers, 1996, 153 pages

Spatial information technologies provide a powerful organizational and analytical tool for sustainable development decision-making and should be studied, designed and implemented through the use of remote sensing and GIS, in order to ensure economic development without affecting the ecology and the environment. The present manual combines the theoretical aspects of the technology with a description of concrete applications developed by countries of the region for land resources management and regional planning, tax mapping and zoning, local governance, volcanic hazard risk prediction, and modelling flooding impact from dam construction.

Pilot Scale Feasibility Study on an Earth Space Information Network for Asia and the Pacific, 1996, 90 pages

The pilot study, reported on in this volume, was conducted by the Space Technology Applications Section (STAS) of the Environment and Natural Resources Division of ESCAP and had as its purpose to determine the feasibility of a regional operational earth space information network that would assist access to, and distribution of, data and information required for planning and implementing sustainable development. Based on an analysis of the information acquired, a structure of the Earth Space Information Network for Asia and Pacific (ESINAP) has been proposed.

Proceedings of the First Meetings of Regional Working Groups on Space Applications for Sustainable Development, 1995-1996, 1996, 121 pages

The Ministerial Conference on Space Applications for Development recommended the constitution of regional working groups to promote and sustain regional cooperation on space technology applications in four sectors: (a) remote sensing, GIS and satellite-based positioning, (b) satellite meteorology, (c) satellite communications, and (d) space sciences and technology applications. This volume contains a report on the four regional meetings of the Working Groups on Space Applications for Sustainable Development convened in Bangladesh (June 1995), Indonesia (February 1996), China (March 1996), and Republic of Korea (April/May 1996) to review the space technology applications, as envisaged in the Regional Strategy and the Regional Action Plan.

Small is Beautiful: Affordable Space Missions for the Sustainable Development of Asia and the Pacific, 1997, 97 pages

Recent times have witnessed a major breakthrough in the field of satellite technology, miniaturization, through the use of high-technology mechanisms which has increased the potential to build operational small satellite systems. This report examines whether small and comparatively inexpensive satellites have a role in the sustainable development of Asia and the Pacific. In addition to exploring the financial and technical reasons for the growing interest in small satellites, the publication gives details of how this technology can be productively used.
