Lifelong Preparation for Old Age in Asia and the Pacific, 1996, 155 pages
Although the increasing proportion of older persons is a worldwide phenomenon, the process is happening much faster in Asia than in Europe or North America, with significant implications for the ESCAP countries, where families have traditionally supported older people. In recognizing that ageing is a lifelong process, most countries in the region have developed policies and programmes concerning older persons but have not concerned themselves with the equally critical issue of preparing younger people for old age. This publication consisting of three parts: (1) policy framework for lifelong preparation for old age, (2) regional overview, and (3) illustrative country situations and recommendations, has been prepared with the aim of helping to rectify that situation.

Public Expenditure in the Provision of Social Services in Bangladesh and Nepal, 1996, 90 pages
Human resources development is being increasingly recognized by development economists and policy makers as a crucial factor in promoting sustained and self-reliant socio-economic development. As in other developing countries of the region, Bangladesh and Nepal have been making concerted efforts at market-oriented reforms. While the change in policy direction is welcome, Governments will still have to continue to play the lead role in providing health, education and water supply and sanitation services. This volume analyses the role of public expenditure in the provision of social services in Bangladesh and Nepal and makes recommendations to address emerging issues.
