Geological Aspects of Land-Use Planning
Atlas of Urban Geology Series, Vol.8, 1996, 125 pages
One of the series issued since 1988, designed to raise awareness among geoscience professionals, urban planners and decision makers, provides information on the adverse effects on the economy, environment, human health and safety, by ignoring natural and geological conditions - both on the surface and underground - in urban land-use planning, development and management.
This volume is based on the Expert Group Meeting on Geological Aspects of Land-use Planning held in Bangkok, May 10-13, 1994, and includes papers extolling the benefits of geological advice in planning, through those describing general techniques and methodologies, and the launch of national programmes on urban geology, to more specific applications, notably natural disaster mitigation. Country studies focused on geodata applications in planning in Russia Federation, the Netherlands, China, New Zealand, Republic of Korea and Indonesia are also included.

Manual on Environmental and Urban Geology of Fast-growing Cities
Atlas of Urban Geology Series, Vol.9, 1997, 298 pages
This manual is focused on the integration of geology in urban planning in offices and boardrooms and is based on a Workshop-cum-Training Course on Environmental and Urban Geology of Fast-growing Cities, held in Shanghai, China, that had as its objective increasing awareness and the exchange of experience on the importance of the earth sciences in land-use planning and the design of urban layouts. The manual's ringband-type cover is chosen to allow for expansion and updating of the contents, as more knowledge and experience are accumulated.

Mineral Recovery, Recycling, Waste Prevention and Confinement for Sustainable Development
in Asia and the Pacific Region
Resources Assessment, Development and Management, Vol.1, 1995, 179 pages
This volume, the first in the series, focuses on creating an awareness of the environmental impacts arising from (a) surface disruption associated with the mining activity, (b) surface and subsurface ground water pollution from mine effluents, (c) tailing disposal, (d) smelting and refining activities, and (e) lack or proper mine closure and land reclamation procedures, provides an overview of mining, mineral processing and waste management in the Asia-Pacific region, mineral waste minimization and pollution control technologies, and mineral recovery, recycling and waste prevention for sustainable development.
The environmental degradation in fast-growing industrial and urban centres in the Asia-Pacific region has brought the issues of waste storage, recycling and disposal as matters of growing concern to the society. The issues of waste disposal (except nuclear wastes) in subsurface space with emphasis on the geological and environmental criteria in selection and monitoring the space for confinement are addressed and presented in the second part of the publication.
