This annual report contains proceedings of the Commission's annual session submitted to the Economic and Social Council, providing basic information on the role, functions, and activities of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP).
The current report reviews the activities since the 52nd session, and reports on the 53rd session of the Commission, covering policy issues on "Asia and the Pacific into the 21st century: opportunities and challenges for the ESCAP region" and development issues and actions taken to promote regional economic cooperation, environment and sustainable development, poverty alleviation, transport and communications, statistics, and least developed, landlocked and island developing countries. Also included are the resolution adopted by the Commission concerning restructuring of ESCAP's conference structure, summary reports of regional intergovernmental organizations, programme of work for 1998-1999 pertaining to the subprogrammes of ESCAP, lists of publications, meetings and advisory services and terms of reference and rules of procedure of the Commission.
