NEWSY EVENTS AT UN ESCAP
To inform you well in advance of the following events we are pleased to provide you with a short summary of what is taking place at ESCAP during the next weeks. Reminders will be sent through media alerts before the events.
ESCAP/UNCTAD High-level Officials Meeting of ESCAP Developing Countries in Preparation for the Fourth WTO Ministerial Meeting, 24-25 September, Bangkok:
Prior to the WTO meeting in Qatar, and amidst the economic gloom, ESCAP developing countries will discuss how to participate more proactively in international trade organizations. The meeting will provide high-level trade policy decision-makers with a common forum in which they can exchange regional experiences and views. Frank and open discussions are expected. The opening session will be held at 09:00 hours in Conference Room 3, United Nations Conference Centre, Bangkok.
Workshop on Integrating Paid and Unpaid Work into National Systems, 24-27 September, Bangkok:
A large number of women in Asia and the Pacific never receive money for their work. Many countries do not fully reflect the contribution of unremunerated work to their economies. This workshop aims at improving the measurement of unpaid work. Three countries will present case studies on how paid and unpaid work can be successfully integrated into national policies.
East Asia and Pacific Regional Consultation for the Second World Congress against Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children, 16-18 October, Bangkok:
Commercial sexual exploitation of children is a major concern in the Asia-Pacific region and a growing global crisis. In preparation for the 2nd World Congress on this issue hosted by the Government of Japan in December in Yokohama, a regional consultation will take place in Bangkok. More than 200 government leaders, representatives from UN agencies, civil society organizations and the private sector will meet with young people from Asia and the Pacific to develop an action plan for combating CSEC.
During the meeting, on October 17, a media night will be held at the FCCT in Bangkok, focusing on the progress that has been made since the First World Congress in Stockholm five years ago. The evening's speakers will be people who work in the frontlines of the battle against CSEC in the Asian and Pacific region.
CITYNET BANGKOK CONGRESS 2001: People Centered Cities in a Globalizing World: A Mayors' and Citizens' Forum, 29 October - 2 November, Bangkok:
The 2001 Bangkok Congress will work towards realizing CITYNET's objectives: to create people-friendly cities that are socially just, ecologically sustainable, politically participatory, economically productive, and culturally vibrant.
Systems of governance in cities in Asia and the Pacific have so far been rather ineffective in keeping pace with rapid urbanization in the past three decades, resulting in the mushrooming of slums and squatter settlements. More than 100 cities in 20 countries gather and co-operate with each other under the framework of CITYNET, an institution established in 1987 and based in Japan.
Ministerial Conference on Infrastructure - SEOUL, 12-17 November, Seoul, Korea:
The Conference will discuss the state of infrastructure in the Asian
and Pacific region, the challenges posed and the opportunities for cooperation.
Major issues confronting the region in the development of adequate, efficient
and reliable infrastructure facilities and services, particularly in the
face of globalization, will be discussed.
Current and Prospective Economic Performance in the ESCAP region, 30 November, Bangkok:
ESCAP's new regional economic bulletin will be launched following a meeting of top thinkers on the economy. Emphasis will be on the economic landscape of the future.
