United Nations to strengthen outreach in East and North-East Asia
Bangkok (UN ESCAP Strategic Communications and Advocacy Section) – The United Nations will enhance its outreach to promote sustainable and inclusive growth in East and North-East Asia, the top United Nations Asia-Pacific official said while signing an agreement here today with the Government of the Republic of Korea which hosts the world body’s subregional development hub.
“We look forward to scaling up the work of the Subregional Office and ensuring that it becomes the hub of multilateralism on a host of social, economic and environmental issues in the subregion,” Dr. Noeleen Heyzer, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) said at the ceremony where she authorized the Host Country Agreement with H.E. Mr. Lim Jae-hong, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Thailand.
Inaugurated last year in Incheon, Republic of Korea, the ESCAP Subregional Office for East and North-East Asia (SRO-ENA) covers China, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Japan, Mongolia, the Republic of Korea and the Russian Federation.
The ESCAP Incheon office focuses on East and North-East regional priorities including intraregional trade, greening the economies of the subregion, youth unemployment, social disparity, environmental sustainability and energy efficiency.
The ESCAP East and North-East Asia office is one of four United Nations subregional centres in Asia and the Pacific. Other ESCAP subregional offices cover North and Central Asia (from Almaty, Kazakhstan), South-West Asia (from New Delhi, India) and the Pacific (from Suva, Fiji). The South-East Asian subregion is covered by ESCAP headquarters in Bangkok, Thailand.
The subregional centres enable the United Nations to better address specific development priorities of the geographically, economically and culturally diverse Asia-Pacific region.
