Invitation to the Commemoration of International Women’s Day, 8 March 2007

Bangkok (United Nations Information Services) – In celebration of International Women’s Day, the United Nations system in Thailand will organize a special event on Thursday, 8 March 2007 at the United Nations Conference Centre (UNCC). This year’s global theme is ‘Ending Impunity for Violence Against Women,’ which highlights the critical need to create and maintain a legal, political and social environment in which violence against women is not tolerated.

The special event will feature a panel discussion, an exhibition, and film screenings. The panellists will include:

  • Ms. Naiyana Supapung, Commissioner of the National Human Rights Commission of Thailand
  • Ms. Areewan Jatuthong, former Miss Thailand Runner-up, student of law and survivor of domestic violence
  • Dr. Lawan Thanadsillapakul, Professor of Law at the Institute for International Economic and Business Law Studies

The event will also feature Dr. Peter Piot, Executive Director of UNAIDS who will present a special statement and a briefing on the Secretary-General’s in-depth study on all forms of violence against women by Ms. Rita Reddy of UNESCAP.

Selected films on this year’s theme will also be screened.
