Bangkok (United Nations Information Services) -- The Governing Council of UNESCAP's Asian and Pacific Training Centre for Information and Communication Technology for Development (APCICT) is holding its Second Session at it headquarters in Incheon, Republic of Korea, from 16 to 17 April 2007.

Mr. Kim Hak-Su, Under Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Secretary of UNESCAP, will deliver an opening statement for the Second Session of APCICT’s Governing Council. The meeting will be attended by high level officials from the following eight Governing Council member countries: Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Islamic Republic of Iran, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, the Republic of Korea and Thailand, as well as by representatives from Incheon City and UNESCAP.

The Director of APCICT, Ms. Hyeun-Suk Rhee, will give presentations on the administration and financial status of APCICT, the activities of the Centre since the first Governing Council session, and the Centre’s work programme 2007/2008. Following these presentations, the attending delegates will discuss the status of ICT Capacity Building in their respective countries. The outputs of these discussions will be considered for further APCICT activities.

The meeting is expected to provide further guidance on the direction of the Centre in fulfilling its mandate with a special focus on enhancing knowledge and skills in ICT for policy makers and ICT professionals, enhancing the capacity of ICT trainers and ICT training institutions, the provision of advisory services on human resource development programmes, and undertaking analytical studies related to human resources development in ICT. The recommendations of APCICT’s Regional Forum on ICT Capacity Building, which was held March 2007, will be used as input for this process.

APCICT is a subsidiary body of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP). The role and mission for APCICT is to strengthen the efforts of the ESCAP member countries to use ICT in their socio-economic development through building the human and institutional capacity for ICT.
