Foreign Investments reached 165 billion in 2005 in Asia

According to the UNCTAD’s World Investment Report 2006, South-South Investment has reached a record level last year

Bangkok (United Nations Information Services) - The World Investment Report 2006 of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) will be launched in Bangkok on 16 October at 2:30 pm by the International Institute for Trade and Development (ITD) and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) at the United Nations Conference Centre.

Mr. Marinus W. Sikkel, Chief of the Investment and Enterprise Development Section of UNESCAP will present the report. Dr. Somchin Suntavaruk, Deputy Executive Director of ITD and Mr. Vittaya Praisuwan, Senior Executive Investment Advisor, the Board of Investment of Thailand will be participating.

The report addresses the theme of “Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) from Developing and Transition Economies: Implication for Development”. The report notes that developing and transition economies are rising as foreign investors and that most of these investments end up in other developing countries. The report argues that appropriate policy responses in both home and the host countries can increase the benefit of such investments and contribute to development.

More information on the report, including the trend of South-South investment and its impact on the Asia-Pacific region will be presented and distributed during the launch.
