IMPORTANT UN ACTIVITIES IN OCTOBER FOR YOUR NEWS CALENDAR

16 October, 10 a.m.: UN International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.

The programme starts at the UNCC at 10am and will include the launch of a tripartite. “The Millennium Development Goals: Progress in Asia and the Pacific 2006” from UNESCAP, ADB and UNDP on anti poverty progress in this region.

The Stand Up campaign, a global event to set an official Guinness Record for the most number of people to Stand Up Against Poverty, will also be observed. Participants can view the Celebrity Voices video. The regional UN Millennium Campaign in the Asia-Pacific is expecting 15-20 million people in this region to stand up. The Stand up campaign in Bangkok will take place from 10 to 11 a.m. at UNCC. <http://www.unescap.org/pdd/calendar/PovDay/2006/index.asp>

16 October, 3 p.m.: Launching of UNCTAD World Investment Report 2006, UNCC.

17 October, 9 a.m.: World Food Day at the FAO Office, Pra Arthit Road. Presided over by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.

17 October, 10.30 a.m.: UNODC Opium Survey Launch, Conference Room G, UNCC

20 October: UN Day marked in Thailand with Focus on MDGs

Programme starts with a ceremonial flag raising and band from 8:10am followed by a special programme at the UNCC from 9am. Attended by senior Government representatives, diplomats, UN staffers and the public.

The programme includes reading of the MDGs and the pledge by children; the launch of Our United Nations, a children’s cartoon book produced by UNIS; musical performances; a fun MDG quiz, and the UN Day exhibition on the Millennium Development Goals. The exhibition by the UN family in Thailand includes ten panels from Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs exhibition on the King of Thailand’s human development projects.

(Please note that in view of the fact that UN Day 24th October is an official UN holiday, the event is being marked on October 20th instead.)

20 October 2.30 p.m.: Press conference on Avian/Human Influenza at the UNCC Theatre with Senior UN System Coordinator for Avian and Human Influenza Dr David Nabarro.

20 October: Gala Dinner and Dance hosted by the UN Women’s Club Of Thailand (UNWC) on the occasion of UN Day with proceeds to charity. 7pm at Westin Grande Sukhumvit Ballroom. Call UNWC for tickets 02-288 2484 / unwcbkkevents@yahoo.com

24 October: Official UN Day marking 61 years of the United Nations.

29 October: UN Day Fun Run starting on Sunday morning 6am in front of the UN Building Bangkok.
